Why look beyond Langtang this autumn
The devastating floods in the Rasuwa region on 26 August 2026 have made travel to Langtang far harder this trekking season. If your dates are fixed and you would rather not gamble on road repairs, there is another route worth a serious look: the Khopra Ridge Trek in the Annapurna region.
Khopra Ridge offers mountains, forests, traditional villages, panoramic Himalayan views and a relatively quiet trail. It is reached from the Pokhara side, well away from the affected Rasuwa corridor.
The short version
The main problem for Langtang in 2026 is reaching the trailhead, not the trail itself. Khopra Ridge (about 3,660 m) gives you Dhaulagiri and Annapurna views, rhododendron and oak forest, Magar and Gurung villages and community-run lodges, all starting from the Pokhara side.
Check the latest access information before you plan any Langtang trip, and consider Khopra if you want certainty for your dates.
Langtang trek: what happened?
On 26 August 2026, northern Nepal was hit by a catastrophic flood and related mountain collapse that struck Rasuwa and the Trishuli-Bhotekoshi corridor.
The disaster caused massive damage to infrastructure in and around Syabrubesi, the traditional gateway to the Langtang Valley, and to the road connecting it to Dhunche and Kathmandu. According to The Kathmandu Post, bridges, roads, trails and parts of Syabrubesi were swept away, and the Langtang area was effectively cut off from road travel.
This is not a permanent closure. It does not mean the whole Langtang trekking trail is destroyed or closed indefinitely. According to the latest trekking industry updates, the main obstacle is reaching the trailhead rather than the Langtang Valley trail itself. Confirm current access and local conditions before making any plans.
If you have specific dates in mind and do not want to deal with the uncertainty of travel, you may want to consider a different trekking area for autumn 2026.
Why choose Khopra Ridge?
The Khopra Ridge Trek, also called the Khopra Danda Trek, runs through the more secluded side of the Annapurna region. The path climbs through traditional villages, rhododendron and oak forest and alpine pasture before reaching Khopra Ridge at about 3,660 m. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South and Nilgiri are among the peaks you see along the way.
Trekkers usually pick Langtang for dramatic Himalayan scenery, forest trails, traditional mountain villages, high-altitude landscapes and a route that is less busy than most in Nepal. Khopra offers all of these.
1. A different Himalayan experience
The trail passes through Magar and Gurung communities, thick rhododendron forest, traditional villages and high alpine pastures before ending on a ridge that overlooks the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.
That combination makes Khopra a strong alternative for anyone who wants Langtang-style variety without giving up the mountain views.
2. Quieter than the classics
Khopra sees far less traffic than popular routes such as Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp and Ghorepani Poon Hill. You can enjoy the Himalayas without sharing every day of the trail with a crowd.
Photographers and content creators benefit most, because there are long stretches of trail, forest and village scenery where you can work at a slower pace.
3. Incredible Dhaulagiri views
The mountain panorama is the main reward. From the ridge you get excellent views of Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and other peaks of the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri region, including Annapurna South and Nilgiri.
The scenery changes as you climb: village, forest, rhododendron, alpine pasture, then the open Himalayan ridge. That variety is what makes Khopra such a rewarding alternative to the well-trodden trails.
4. Community-based trekking
Sections of the trail rely on community-run accommodation, operated by local people rather than large commercial operators. Your stay supports the mountain communities directly.
For travellers interested in responsible tourism, it means more than walking through the mountains. You also experience the villages, culture, food and hospitality of the people who live there.
5. Easy to reach from Pokhara
If you are already travelling to Pokhara, Khopra Ridge is convenient. The walk starts in the Annapurna region and can be combined with other Annapurna treks, such as Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp.
Rather than wait for the northern road network to recover, you can spend your time in the Himalayas of the Annapurna region.
Khopra Ridge vs Langtang trek
Both treks offer Himalayan scenery, forests and mountain villages, but the experience differs.
| Feature | Langtang Trek | Khopra Ridge Trek |
|---|---|---|
| Region | Langtang Valley, Rasuwa | Annapurna region |
| Main access | Kathmandu → Trishuli → Dhunche / Syabrubesi | Pokhara / Annapurna side |
| 2026 consideration | Road and bridge damage on the Rasuwa corridor after the August floods | Not part of the affected Rasuwa corridor |
| Main high point | Around Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) | Khopra Ridge (3,660 m) |
| Landscape | Valley, forests, glaciers and high mountains | Forests, alpine meadows, mountains and high ridges |
| Well-known peaks | Langtang Lirung and the Langtang range | Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri and others |
| Trek character | Classic Himalayan valley trek | Quieter, offbeat ridge trek |
| Optional high extension | Kyanjin Ri / Tserko Ri | Khayer Lake |
What about Khayer Lake?
If you want an extra challenge, the Khopra Ridge Trek can be extended to Khayer Lake, a high-altitude sacred lake in the Annapurna region. The side trip takes you significantly higher than Khopra Ridge and is a long, demanding day.
Several current trekking guides place Khayer Lake at roughly 4,500 to 4,700 m, depending on the route and reference point used.
An optional extension, not part of the standard trek. If you mainly want a moderate Himalayan trek, sticking to the main Khopra Ridge itinerary is the more comfortable choice.
Is Khopra Ridge suitable for autumn 2026?
Autumn is one of Nepal's major trekking seasons, particularly from October onward. For Khopra Ridge, October and November generally offer favourable conditions, with clear mountain views becoming more common after the monsoon. Spring, especially March and April, is the other popular period because of the rhododendron forests.
Mountain weather can change quickly, so always check conditions locally before departure. Our Khopra Ridge packing guide explains what to bring for each season.
An alternative doesn't mean forgetting Langtang
Langtang remains an important trekking destination in Nepal, and the current situation should not be read as the end of Langtang trekking. The challenge in September 2026 is access and infrastructure recovery after the floods.
Reports indicate that reconstruction is under way, and the situation may change considerably over the coming weeks. For trekkers planning well into the future, Langtang may again become readily accessible.
But if your dates are approaching and you want to avoid uncertainty, the Annapurna region has several alternatives, and Khopra Ridge stands out for travellers who want a quieter, more off-the-beaten-path experience.
Why Khopra Ridge could be your 2026 Langtang alternative
If you were planning the Langtang trek but are reconsidering because of the flood-damaged access routes, Khopra Ridge offers a combination worth considering:
- Spectacular Himalayan views
- Rhododendron and mountain forests
- Traditional Magar and Gurung villages
- A quieter trekking experience
- Dhaulagiri and Annapurna panoramas
- Community-based mountain accommodation
- Access from the Pokhara / Annapurna side
- An optional Khayer Lake adventure
Most importantly, choosing Khopra Ridge does not mean choosing a lesser Himalayan experience. It means exploring a different side of Nepal's mountains. Sometimes an unexpected change of plan leads you to a trail you might otherwise have overlooked.
