About Mardi Himal and Poon Hill Trek

The Mardi Himal and Poon Hill Trek is a 10-day, moderate trek from Pokhara that joins two of the Annapurna region's finest walks in one journey. You climb the Mardi Himal ridge to the Upper Viewpoint and Mardi Base Camp, cross to Ghandruk, Tadapani and Ghorepani for the famous Poon Hill sunrise, then finish along the quiet Kokhe Danda ridge and down through the villages of Parbat.

The Mardi Himal section is a narrow, open ridge that rises steadily above the rhododendron and oak forest. After a drive from Pokhara to Kande, you climb through Australian Base Camp to Suire Danda, then on to Low Camp and High Camp at 3,553m. Above the treeline, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Mardi Himal stand almost within reach, and the ridge is far quieter than the more crowded routes in the region.

The highlight of this section is the early morning hike from High Camp to the Upper Viewpoint and Mardi Base Camp. Starting before dawn, you climb for two to three hours to watch the first light touch the peaks, with a wide sweep of the Annapurna range behind you. It is a demanding morning, but the reward is one of the closest mountain panoramas you can reach without technical climbing.

After descending to Rest Camp and Landruk, the trek moves into Gurung country. Ghandruk is one of the largest Gurung villages in Nepal, with stone-paved lanes, traditional houses and close views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. A restful morning here gives your legs a break before you continue to Tadapani through Bhaisikharka, and then to Ghorepani through rhododendron and oak forest via Banthati and Deurali.

Poon Hill (3,210m) is the second highlight. A short, steep climb before breakfast puts you on one of the best sunrise viewpoints in Nepal, with Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range turning gold in the first light. From here the route leaves the standard circuit and follows the ridge to Kokhe Danda (3,309m), a quiet viewpoint that most trekkers never visit.

The final two days show a side of the region that few visitors see. You descend through Jaljala to Lespar, then walk down via Haljure to Banau, traditional villages in the Parbat district where life still follows the rhythm of farming and the seasons. From Banau, a private vehicle takes you back to Pokhara in about two and a half hours.

Best Time, Cost and Getting There

Best time: October and November give the clearest views and dry trails, and March to May brings rhododendron blooms along the ridge and through the forest between Tadapani and Ghorepani. December to February is possible for well-prepared trekkers, but High Camp nights are well below freezing. June to September is monsoon, when the high ridge gets slippery and views are unpredictable.

Cost: the trek costs $680 to $850 per person depending on group size. It includes private transport, three meals a day with tea or coffee, tea house accommodation and your guide. ACAP and TIMS permits are extra, and we help you arrange them in Pokhara. See the cost table.

Getting there: we drive from Pokhara to Kande in about an hour and start walking from there. The trek ends at Banau in Parbat, where our vehicle takes you back to Pokhara in about two and a half hours.

Short on time? The 5-day Mardi Himal Trek covers the ridge and viewpoint only. For an easier homestay trek in Parbat, see the Kokhe Danda Trek, or combine more viewpoints with the Multiple Viewpoints Trek.

Detailed Itinerary

We start with a morning drive from Pokhara to Kande, about 34 KM and an hour away. From Kande we begin our trek through the forest, passing Australian Base Camp, a lovely viewpoint on the way. From here the trail climbs steadily to Suire Danda, where we stay overnight.

Altitude: 2,438m Distance: 7.3 KM Time: 4 Hrs (+1 Hr drive) Stay: Tea House

Today we continue up the ridge through thick rhododendron and oak forest to Forest Camp, where we stop for lunch. The trail keeps climbing gently through the trees, and views open up whenever the forest thins. We reach Low Camp in the afternoon and spend the night here.

Altitude: 3,004m Distance: 9.6 KM Time: 6–6.5 Hrs Stay: Tea House

This is a shorter but steady uphill day. We climb via Badal Danda, where the forest gives way to open ridge and the Himalayan views become much closer. We reach High Camp early enough to rest and adjust to the altitude before the big day tomorrow. With clear weather, the sunset and evening views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range are superb.

Altitude: 3,553m Distance: 5 KM Time: 3.5–4 Hrs Stay: Tea House

This is the main day of the trek. We leave very early in the morning for the Upper Viewpoint and Mardi Base Camp, a two to three hour climb along the narrow ridge. If the sky is clear, we reach the top in time to watch the sunrise over the Annapurna range.

After spending time at the top, we return to High Camp for breakfast and then start the long descent. We follow the ridge down via Badal Danda and continue to Rest Camp, where we stay overnight. Expect around four hours of downhill walking after the climb, so this is a long day on the legs.

Altitude: 2,600m (Rest Camp) Distance: 12.5 KM Time: 2–3 Hrs up, 4 Hrs down Stay: Tea House

We leave the ridge behind and descend for about three hours to Landruk, a Gurung village beside the Modi Khola. After a break here, we cross the river and climb for around two hours to Ghandruk, one of the biggest and most beautiful Gurung villages in Nepal. We spend the night here.

Altitude: 2,000m Distance: 8.2 KM Time: 3 Hrs down + 2 Hrs up Stay: Tea House

We enjoy a restful morning in Ghandruk with early views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre, and time to wander through the village lanes. Later, we trek uphill via Bhaisikharka to Tadapani, a walk of around three and a half hours through forest. Tadapani sits on a ridge with a close view of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

Altitude: 2,705m Distance: 6.2 KM Time: 3.5 Hrs Stay: Tea House

A day of mixed uphill and downhill walking through beautiful rhododendron and oak forest. We drop to Banthati for lunch, then climb steadily to Deurali, where the trail reaches its highest point of the day at around 3,100m, before the final stretch into Ghorepani. It is about six hours of walking in total.

Altitude: 2,880m Distance: 8.4 KM Time: 6 Hrs Stay: Tea House

We start the morning with an hour of steep climbing to Poon Hill (3,210m), one of the most celebrated sunrise viewpoints in Nepal. In clear weather, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Machhapuchhre glow in the first light. After returning to Ghorepani for breakfast, we leave the busy trail and follow the ridge for about three hours to Kokhe Danda, a quiet viewpoint with wide Himalayan views.

Altitude: 3,309m Distance: 6 KM Time: 1 Hr up, 3 Hrs to Kokhe Danda Stay: Tea House

After sunrise views from Kokhe Danda, we begin a long downhill day of about five and a half hours. The trail passes through Jaljala, where the snow peaks remain in view, and continues down through forest and farmland to the village of Lespar, where we stay overnight.

Distance: 9.5 KM Time: 5.5 Hrs Stay: Village Homestay

We trek down via Haljure to Banau, a walk of around three hours, where our vehicle is waiting. From Banau it is a two and a half hour drive back to Pokhara, where our 10-day trek ends.

Altitude: 2,100m (Banau) Distance: 7.1 KM Time: 3 Hrs hike + 2.5 Hrs drive

What Trekkers Say About Mardi Himal & Poon Hill

★★★★★

We did a 10-day trek (Mardi Himal, Poonhill and Kokhe Danda) with Sameer and two porters and enjoyed every moment of it. Sameer was really responsive right from the beginning, answering all of our questions promptly and exhaustively. He came to our hotel in Pokhara the night before leaving, which was really helpful. The trek was perfectly organized, our accomodations were comfortable, meals were freshly prepared, and tasty drinks were provided.
Sameer is a sweet, attentive, knowledgeable young guide with perfect English and a fun sense of humor. He is also an amazing photographer.
Our porters were equally wonderful and kind. We had fun learning Nepalese from them and sharing stories.
We got extremely lucky as we had clear views everyday except on the last day. The mountains were majestic and breathtaking, and we mostly had the trail for ourselves as we were in the off season. The added cultural experience we got passing through villages was memorable, notably staying at one of our porter's home.
Thank you, Sameer, Nor and Dil for making our first trek in Nepal so special.
